I've been thinking about updating a bit and getting a bike recently as well. I'd tried out the ZX6 too but it just seemed overly cumbersome for getting around town.
In the end, don't stress your decision on what others perceive as meeting their perception of a "real man's motorcycle". Get what you like and what fits your purposes.
